Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What if I have never done a triathlon before?
That’s fine – your first race will be one of your most memorable and rewarding experiences. We are committed to help you have a FANTASTIC experience and to gain the confidence and develop the skills you will need to safely and enjoyably complete your 1st or your 51st triathlon.
Q. What if I’m not as fit as some other people in the squad?
Not a problem at all – we all have to start somewhere. All programs are designed, and can be adapted, for people of all levels of fitness. Distances, intensities, repetitions and durations of activities can vary between all squad members depending on individual needs. All you need to do is come to each session and try YOUR best.
Q. What if I can’t swim?
Swimming is the biggest fear of most new comers to triathlon. We will teach you how to swim safely in the pool and in shallow water in a sheltered safe bay. We will teach you how to breath and navigate in shallow open water and where and how to safely swim in a crowd. Nervous swimmers can remain in shallow water for all sessions until they feel more comfortable and are confident to swim in deeper water. SAFETY is our key priority and your enjoyment of open water swimming is essential.
Q. Can I speak to the coaches about my personal triathlon goals?
Yes. All Squad Members will have the opportunity to arrange a 20 minute consultation at the start of their program with the coaches to discuss their personal triathlon goals and any individual concerns. Whilst we train as a Squad, all programs are designed for, and are adaptable to, all levels of fitness and all levels of experience.
Q. Can I get advice with choosing my equipment?
Yes. Our coaches can give you advice on what equipment you need if you are just starting out in the sport and what equipment options are available if you decide to progress further in the sport.
Q. What additional equipment will I need?
You will need your own stop watch, a roadworthy bike (any bike will do – many people race on mountain bikes), bike helmet (must be ASA approved), wind trainer (we can give you advice on the best options for purchase), a good pair of runners. Wetsuits are optional for the mini-triathlons and sprint races, but if you already have one, we will teach you how to swim in it (and get in and out of it during a race!). Specialised Squad swimming equipment (such as kick pads and pull buoys) are provided.
Q. Do I have to wear a triathlon suit?
No. Triathletes wear a range of outfits when they race – anything from T-shirts and shorts to specific race wear and triathlon suits. The most important thing is that you are COMFORTABLE in what you are wearing. As a member of the Peninsula Tri Squad you will have the option to wear a customised triathlon suit if you wish, but our coaches can discuss and help you decide on many other options if you would prefer. Peninsula Tri Squad cycling gear, training tops, wetsuits and other equipment can be purchased by all squad members if desired.
Q. Can I choose my sessions?
Sessions are designed to safely and confidently help you achieve your triathlon goals. For this reason, programs are designed with three training sessions a week for 4 week blocks. We do not cater for casual sessions only.
Q. Can I join the squad at any time once a program started?
Yes, you can join at any stage of a program for a minimum of 4 weeks. Please contact us for further details.
Q. Should I train outside of the Squad hours?
During your pre-program consultation we encourage you to discuss your personal triathlon goals. Our experienced coaches can assist you to ensure you get the best out of your body and your training. We offer detailed advice on training to achieve your personal goals outside Squad training hours.
Q. Can I get nutritional support?
Yes. We will provide the Squad with advice in training, pre-race and race day nutrition. If you are interested in further nutritional support and weight control advice we can direct you to an additional service available with an experienced fitness and weight loss coach.
Q. How do I book and pay for a program?
Squad membership is required for all programs. Membership is $50.00. To reserve your spot in a program you need to register as a member of the Squad, complete your registration form and pay by either cash, direct deposit payments or cheque. D/Deposit details will be emailed to you on request. Final payments for a program are due no later than 5pm on the Friday before your program begins.
